2022 is expected to be the G.O.A.T. year to travel, with a highly anticipated rebound slated for spring and summer. From travel trend predictions to tips on planning your getaway, Tamara Lidbom of Peoria-based Anytime Travel Agency has the full scoop to help you successfully prepare for your next trip.
How long have you been in the travel industry? I started taking classes in 2010 and opened my agency in 2011. I wanted to make sure I had enough knowledge about the travel industry and destinations, so I was better prepared to assist my clients in creating the best travel experience possible.
What travel trends are anticipated for 2022? Destination weddings have skyrocketed this year. They are a great way for family and friends to get together and take that long-needed vacation everyone has been needing. Another trend making its way to 2022 are trips on small ship cruises. Ship exploration has been increasing in popularity due to the unique experiences it can offer, like a change of scenery, visits to multiple destinations and fun-themed itineraries. Whether you’re taking a wine-themed cruise, a safari cruise, or an adventure cruise that goes to the Galapagos, the experience will undoubtedly amaze you.
What restrictions can travelers expect when traveling abroad in comparison to staying within the states? Most countries have reduced their “stricter” travel rules for individuals who are vaccinated, though airlines still require masks both in the airport and on airplanes, regardless of whether your flight is domestic or international. As a rule of thumb, I highly recommend checking tourism boards frequently to keep up-to-date with the latest information. Each destination will have different restrictions, even those in the United States.
Do you agree that 2022 will be the “G.O.A.T. Year” for travel? Absolutely! The travel industry is extremely busy. During the pandemic, people were restricted from traveling. Now, after all the canceled and postponed trips, people are ready to make up for the lost time and want to make this next vacation count–and they are.
With vacations being in such high demand this year, do you have any tips to help individuals ensure their travel date? Do not wait until the last minute. Of course, this happens, but pre-planning will allow you more options for flight schedules, hotel availability and room to plan. Inventory is getting sold out fast. If you are wanting to travel during a holiday or peak time of the year, try to start planning at least nine months out. If you choose off-peak travel time, inventory availability may lean in your favor.
When is the best time to travel? It depends on what you want to do, what your travel priorities are and the destination. Destinations will have peak travel times throughout the year for weather and activities, like whale watching or festivals. Holidays are also a very popular time for couples and families to travel. With these options, prices are usually higher and the destination tends to be busier with tourists. If you are working with a travel agent, they can help you narrow that down based on your travel priorities.
What tips do you have for traveling abroad? Check the tourism boards often for current travel restrictions/requirements and be respectful of their requirements. I would recommend carrying extra copies of vaccination documents, in case you lose or destroy your original, and always have extra masks on hand.
What advice would you give to individuals who are hesitant to travel in our current climate? COVID is as much within our country as it is internationally, and the United States still requires the return COVID test to re-enter the U.S. safely. It’s important to be flexible when traveling during this time, your dates may need to change based on restrictions, and you may test positive on the journey home–it’s important to be prepared and mindful of the possibilities.
