Where can you travel without a PCR test? Testing rules for top destinations including Spain, France and Turkey

Amy Stewart

The Easter holiday season is almost here, and millions of people across the UK will be eagerly anticipating a much-needed foreign holiday in the sun. After two years of disruption to tourism due to the coronavirus pandemic, tourism is slowly getting back to normal.

A number of countries have recently relaxed their entry restrictions ahead of the Easter getaway. The tourism industry has been badly hit by the pandemic, and destinations are hoping to take advantage of all the pent-up demand for overseas travel.

Testing requirements, too, have been relaxed by many destinations in anticipation of the Easter holiday period. So which destinations can you travel to without having to do a pre-travel PCR test?

Where can you travel without a PCR test?

Numerous countries are now allowing at least some people to enter without having to do a PCR test before travelling. These countries include the following:

If you’re fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid within the last six months, you can travel to Spain without having to do a PCR test. However, if you had your last regular vaccine dose more than 270 days ago, you’ll need to have a booster shot to be considered fully vaccinated.

You’ll need to present proof of vaccination or recent recovery to Spanish border authorities on your arrival in the country. All travellers also need to complete an online health form before travelling.

Fully-vaccinated arrivals in France no longer need to test for Covid. You will, however, need to provide proof of vaccination and sign a sworn statement that you aren’t suffering from Covid symptoms and haven’t been in recent contact with confirmed cases.

Adults must be fully vaccinated to enter France, unless they can prove their journey is an essential one. Unvaccinated people aged between 12 and 17 can enter the country when travelling with fully-vaccinated adults. Under-12s are exempt from travel restrictions.

You can enter Turkey without testing so long as you’re fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid within the last six months. If you’re unvaccinated, you’ll need to do a pre-travel PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, or a lateral flow within 48 hours.

Fully-vaccinated travellers do not need to do a Covid test to enter Greece, nor do they need to fill out a passenger locator form. Unvaccinated travellers aged five and over must do a PCR within 72 hours before their arrival or a lateral flow within 24 hours.

Fully-vaccinated arrivals in Italy do not need to test. People who’ve had Covid and recovered from it within the last six months can also enter Italy without a test.

However, those who aren’t fully vaccinated or can’t provide proof of recent recovery from the virus will need to take a PCR test within 72 hours before arrival or a lateral flow test within 48 hours. People aged five and under are exempt from testing and vaccination requirements.

If you’re fully vaccinated or can prove recent recovery from Covid (within 30 days of departure), you don’t need to test to enter Dubai. Arrivals under 12 years of age, and those with severe disabilities, are exempt from travel restrictions in Dubai.

However, some people arriving in Dubai may still be required to take a PCR upon their arrival there, according the UK government’s travel guidance. These travellers will then be asked to isolate until they receive the result of their test.

Fully-vaccinated people are allowed to enter mainland Portugal without having to do a test. If you had your last regular vaccine dose more than 270 days ago, you’ll need a booster jab to be considered fully vaccinated by the Portuguese authorities.

However, if you’ve had Covid and recovered from it at least 11 days and no more than 180 days before travelling to mainland Portugal, you can enter the country without having to take a test.
